Fri 4th – Lyn Mikel Brown

Lyn Mikel Brown, Ed.D. is a community activist and Professor of Education and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Colby College. She is co-creator of the nonprofit Hardy Girls Healthy Women (hghw.org), where she develops feminist programs and materials that scaffold girls’ activism and social change work. She is founder of the girl-driven online media literacy and activism campaign, Powered By Girl or PBG (http://poweredbygirl.org/).

Dr. Brown’s scholarship and writing focuses on understanding the conditions that enable girls’ healthy resistance and dissent in the face of oppression. She the author of six curriculums and five books, including Meeting at the Crossroads: Women’s Psychology and Girls’ Development (with Carol Gilligan; a New York Times Notable Book of the Year); Raising Their Voices: The Politics of Girls’ Anger; Girlfighting: Betrayal and Rejection Among Girls; and Packaging Girlhood: Rescuing Our Daughters From Marketers’ Schemes (with Sharon Lamb; winner of a Books For A Better Life Award). She is currently writing a book about partnering with girls and scaffolding girl-fueled activism.

In 2010, Dr. Brown and Hunter College Professor of Social Welfare and Psychology, Dr. Deborah Tolman, initiated SPARK Movement (sparkmovement.org), a growing and diverse coalition of girls, thought leaders, researchers, and partner organizations united in their determination to challenge the sexualization of girls and demand girls’ rights to embodiment and healthy sexuality.
